The School Resource Officer and Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) programs allow deputies from the Frederick County Sheriff's Office to work in Frederick County Public Schools (FCPS). The Frederick County Sheriff's Office has had a partnership with the Frederick County Public Schools to provide the D.A.R.E. program since 1986 and the school resource officer program since 1998.
Deputy Richard White teaches the D.A.R.E. program in all 12 of Frederick County's elementary schools Seargent Charlie Roy assist Deputy White and Deputy Galbraith as needed, and provides the D.A.R.E curriculum to numerous private schools. The program is typically taught to fifth grade students; however, we do offer a D.A.R.E. Middle School program as well.
School Resource Officers (SROs) provide coverage to all Frederick County Public Schools. The SROs provide several services within the public schools to include, but not limited to: law related education, mentoring programs, positive relationship building, crime investigation and prevention, community services, and enhanced safety. The SROs interact with the faculty and students daily, improving the communication between the school community and the Frederick County Sheriff's Office.
The School Safety Division works in partnership with FCPS to help identify and address needs and concerns within our schools to support a safe learning environment for our school community. We maintain a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with FCPS. The purpose of this is to establish a mutually beneficial partnership (School-Law Enforcement Partnership {SLEP}) that both the Frederick County Public Schools and the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office can work within to achieve shared goals, creating an understanding on how the SRO program will be established and implemented within Frederick County Public Schools.
We also work with our schools in providing guidance on Threat Assessment Teams and Crisis Planning.
