Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) Standard Operating Procedure
As of January 1, 2026 the Virginia Department of State Police, Criminal Justice Information Services Division, Data Analysis & Reporting Team (DART) will begin the collection of automated license plate recognition/reader data, as required by § 2.2-5517(I) of the Code of Virginia, relating to the use of ALPR devices being owned, operated, or accessed by your agency.
This law requires any state or local law enforcement agency that places and operates ALPR devices pursuant to the provisions of § 2.2-5517 to report the data to the Department of State Police by April 1st of each year.
