Properties are zoned for different uses. A specific business use of your property may be disallowed in Frederick County's zoning ordinances.
Zoning approval is the first requirement for obtaining a Frederick County business license. Businesses who subsequently change location must submit a new Zoning Review form for approval.
Zoning review and approval is handled by the County's Department of Planning & Development rather than the office of the Commissioner of the Revenue.
Frederick County home-based businesses are not permitted to have, among other things, additional employees, customer parking or reception, signage, outdoor storage, or more than one business vehicle on the property.
Businesses must also comply with additional County requirements such as the filing of an approved commercial site plan for commercial and industrial zoning districts.
Further information including the County's Zoning Ordinance, Code Violations, Applications & Forms, and staff contact can be obtained via the Department of Planning & Development's website at www.fcva.us/planning or by calling the Department staff at 540-665-5651.
