Tax Relief Deadline to Apply is April 2, 2018
FREDERICK COUNTY, VA: Frederick County provides for tax relief for the elderly and for permanently/totally disabled based on various qualifications. Commissioner of the Revenue Ellen Murphy explains, “Among other things, for a married couple, at least one spouse must be 65 years old or older; OR (b) at least one spouse must be permanently and totally disabled. Additionally, total income including tax exempt income of all residents of the dwelling cannot exceed $50,000; however, we do allow an exclusion of the first $8,500 of income for each relative other than either spouse who is living in the dwelling.”
Applications for tax relief must be filed annually to allow filers to update their information. The deadline to apply this year is Monday, April 2. It is recommended that people file in person the first time or, if that is not possible, the application should be notarized before mailing. Some of the documents needed when filing for elderly tax relief include income and asset verification, including the first page of the prior year's federal tax return if one was filed. Those filing for the first time for permanently/totally disabled tax relief need to attach to the application a certification letter from two doctors or a copy of the Social Security Administration or Veteran Affairs determination letter.
Once the application and required paperwork is received, it is reviewed by staff and, according to Murphy, “tax bills are adjusted by the Treasurer as determined. If someone does not qualify for 100% relief, we can refer them to our Real Estate Tax Deferral Program to see if that program would help them or they can accept the indicated relief amount.”
